HEBBORN FAMILY HISTORY & NEWS - July 2002.
26th July 1702
JOHN HEBORN [C008] son of John Heborn/Hebborn/Heyborn [B004] and Jane Sanders was baptised at Toot Baldon on the 26th July 1702. Quite a number of references to him have been found thanks to the efforts of Jenny Hebborn and Joan Williams. Jenny obtained a copy of his will which mentioned leasehold property in Toot Baldon. She was able to get confirmation of this from The Archivist of Queens College, Oxford. Joan found the following in Jackson's Oxford Journal of 7th Jul 1764 under Wanted Persons "Thomas English, labourer who eloped last month leaving family chargeable to Parish. Signed John Heborn, Churchwarden of Garsington”. These discoveries give fascinating glimpses of his life, but fall short of giving undeniable evidence of a connection between the Heb[b]orns of Garsington and the Heb[b]orns of Cowley. I believe that if we could discover the origins of John's father we might establish a link between families and possibly the Heyborns of the Thame area.
JOHN HEBORN [C008] married Ann Snow at Baldon on 31 Oct 1728. They are known to have had the following children: Mary Heborn [D016] bpt. 09 Jan 1728 Toot Baldon. She married Abraham Harper, whose name appears in her father's will although their marriage entry has not been traced. She was a beneficiary of her father's will. John Heborn [D018] bpt. 28 Dec 1733? Bur 15 Mar 1734 Ann Heborn [D019] bpt. not found but married John Kings 29 Aug 1760 at Garsington. William Heborn [D020] bpt. 6 Nov 1737. Married Mary Freeman 29 Aug 1763 Garsington. Buried 4 Jul 1767. He was named executor in his father's Will but pre-deceased him and his sister Ann King was appointed executrix. William and Mary had two sons: John Heborn [E009] who was baptised at Garsington on 2 Sep 1764. At the age of thirteen, he was apprenticed to Thos. and Wm. Benwell tailors for seven years. A John Heborn was buried at Garsington on 7th February 1784, but the Vicar has not entered an age in the register so I cannot be 100% certain that this is the same person. William Heborn [E008] who was baptised on the 10 Nov 1765 and buried on the 29 Nov 1765 at Garsington. Mary Heborn [D020] nee Freeman was married secondly to Richard Turrill on 21 Jul 1773 at the Church of St Peter le Bailey in the City of Oxford. Her new husband was possibly the same Richard Turrill who had witnessed her wedding to William. Heborn.
The Heborn name was not to die out in Garsington with the demise of William [D20] and his children, for another William Heborn [E007] and his wife Mary appear in the Garsington registers. Their children were: William [F007] 1784, James [F008] 1787, Charles [F009] 1790, Elizabeth [F010] 1793, Francis [F011] 1795, Maria [F012] 1799 and Giles [F013] 1802. The descendants of these children make up a large proportion of the Hebborns living today.
I feel there is a probably a family link between these to Garsington families still waiting to be proved.
Totally confused by all these names? I am not surprised. Why not have a look at Chart B004 in ‘RESOURCES'. It is free with no strings attached!
